Forge: Application Server

Note: On June 30, 2008, UITS will retire Steel. No new accounts will be created after March 31, 2008. Steel is replaced by IU's newest supercomputer, Quarry. For more, see About the Steel retirement.

While the front end Steel nodes provide CPU cycles to users, Forge provides the mettle that makes Steel a viable system. Users do not login to Forge, but rather access the software, licenses, databases, et cetera, which are served from Forge.

By having a single application server, users are assured that they will see a consistent suite of products and services on the Steel Cluster.

Forge is a Sun E3500 server running Solaris 2.8, configured with:

  • 4 400MHz UltraSPARC-II processors
  • 4GB memory
  • 10/100 Mb ethernet and Gigabit ethernet
  • 4mm tape drive
  • Sun A1000 disk array with 80GB RAID disk

System administration is provided by the High Performance Systems (HPS).
Support for database systems is provided by the Database Management Support Team.
Support for Mathematical and Statistical software is provided by the Stat/Math Center.
Support for the IMSL software libraries is provided by the High Performance Applications (HPA).
